Vidyartha is one of the finest institutes in Sri Lanka. It has produces number of intellectuals and personalities over the years. The production of Vidyartha is one of the best in multiple fields. The students of Vidyartha are always respected by the association with the name of Viyartha.
Vidyartha society was the one, who took initiative to setup a college and earn the honor times to come. Vidyartha society was on track on 1930s, the great names were the part of the Vidyartha society and they all contributed their part at that time to establish such a strong and recognized society. The names include the leaders like Hon William Gopallawa, Mr.S.L.Ratwatte, Dr.L.B.Senaviratne and many others.
The Vidyartha College was established in 1942 and the main objective was to provide the excellent education facility in the Hill Capital to the Buddhist Children. It was started with strength of around 35 students and with 6 lecturers. Today it has the strength of around 3000 students and 150 highly qualified teachers, who are serving the Sri Lankan Nation with Zeal and Zest as the faculty.
Mr.G.D.A Abeyratne had the privilege to be the first principle of the institute.
Gradually and steadily, Vidyartha College proved its abilities to produce the cream in all fields of life and the important thing to mention that it was well appreciated and acknowledged by the society and the government. As a first step in 1950s, the school was graded as 1st in the country, later on in 1970s; Vidyartha College was recognized as the “1A”.
The Government took over the colledge in 1960 and it is now managed and maintained by the Government.
