Volkswagen is ready to produce One liter fuel efficient car. VW was working for quite a time on fuel efficient car and finally they been able to produce one. The car is not only unique in its fuel capacity but its design is also very cool. The car is fully designed on aero dynamics.
It was actually designed and concept was introduced in 2002 when the exemplary or sample car was produced and was driven by the VW CEO in a shareholders meeting in Hamburg.
Now VW launched the idea again, in fact it was the biggest VW news to shape the prototype into commercial production at Frankfurt auto show.
The one liter car was anticipated to be fuel efficient like it would be reaching 240 miles in a gallon.
Now to reach the level of 240 miles per gallon, three aspects had to be fulfilled to make the car fuel efficient. First it required a super efficient powertrain, a light weight engineering and great aerodynamic.
What VW did to reach these milestones, they went for a two cylinder diesel engine with the capacity of 39 horse power, combined with 14 horse power electric motor. Stop/start system and seven speed dual clutch transmission.
The L1 can run to 100 miles per hour but it reduces the efficiency to a very alarming level of 1.38 liters per 100 KM or 170 miles per gallon.
To reach the second and third milestone, the car is designed in extreme aerodynamic shape, it is slim and smart, made of carbon fiber and very light in weight as just 838 lbs. the car contains two seats in a row, which seems not be liked by the customer as sitting in a car in row looks quite odd, so this aspect has to be reviewed.
The VW sources are every serious to start the commercial production and they are aiming that car would be in the market in 2013.
