Clinical trials revealed more dark facts about Vytorin. It seems like Merck’s Vytorin and Zetia are not going to bring as much revenue to their manufacturers as expected initially because new clinical reports have not given good results about the drugs efficiency. Vytorin and fellow drug Zetia were marketed as blockbuster drugs to cure the cholesterol level and thickness of the arteries. The new clinical trials, which were revealed yesterday, have showed that Vytorin and Zetia do not produce good results when used to reduce the artery thickness.
The researchers released the report yesterday which included the results of clinical trials. The clinical trials revealed that niacin is more effective than Vytorin and Zetia in thinning the arteries. Vytorin had no effect at all on the thickness of the arteries. The reports also showed the patients using Vytorin have suffered with more heart attacks as compared to niacin. The lead author talked to the media about the trial results yesterday. Allen Taylor told the press that instead of trying a new drug, heart patients should keep using old drug i.e. niacin as it is a well-understood, tested drug for heart problems.
It has also been estimated that with the release of the reports the revenue generated by Vytorin manufacturers can fall and they may face a decrease of almost 13% in the sales. This blow on the sales can reduce the revenue and would cut $800 million from the annual profit generated by the drug’s sales. Merck may face a serious blow due to the reports released about Vytorin’s efficiency.
