Waterboarding involves throwing a constant stream of water on the face of the victim. It quickly invokes gag reaction and the victim feels as if he is going to die. Human brain can survive oxygen deprivation for less than 4 minutes. If the oxygen supply is stopped for 4 minutes or more, the brain suffers permanent damage.
Waterboarding was employed at Guantanmo Bay during 2003 and formerly CIA had used the technique to get the truth out of the spies.
The term “waterboarding” is in news as Khalid Sheikh Mohammad had to undergo the inhuman torture of waterboarding for more than 180 times. Surviving waterbording for a few times requires extra human strength and the natural question everybody asking is “How Khalid Sheikh survived the inhuman torture for 180 times?”
As Obama Administration intends to close the mess created by Bush in the shape of Gitmo, Khalid Sheikh would be presented before the court of law in New York. Khalid Sheikh is regarded as the mastermind behind 9/11. Five other Guantanamo bay prisoners will also be presented in the court. The decision has been received positively around the globe.
Waterboarding apart from a serious violation of human rights raises the questions on the trial also. If Sheikh Mohammad has undergone through waterboarding for more than 180 times would he be physically and mentally fit to stand the trial at the court? There are many other legal complexities in the procedure and it would require determination in the part of Obama administration to take the proceedings to their completion.
