A Sat noon blaze became a Grove City landmark and Mercer County tourist draw into a blacked shell despite attempts from a lot of fire departments.
Big smoke could be found from miles away later a fire began in the Madison Avenue workshop of historic Wendell August Forge, which creates handmade metal gifts.
The call came at 1:35 p.m., according to a Mercer County 911 starter, and dozens of firemen were still on-site hrs after the fire, while smoke carried on to spill out of the building. No accidental injury was described.
North Madison Avenue was totally shut off on Sat, as were many connected roads. The Wendell August Forge parking area was occupied with people who lived near and many conveyed their dismay.
R.McCandless and his son Cody stated as they were driving home on state road 173 Sat noon and could view smoke from the fire about 7 miles away.
Cody stated that they were away about halfway to Sandy Lake. They could see this smoke, and maybe 7 or 8 minutes later that, when we came onto Princeton Road (just a couple of blocks away from the Wendell August Forge) we began to see balloons of black smoke.
W. Knecht, chairman of the company that has the Wendell August Forge, based in 1923 in Brockway.
He stated that Wendell August Forge stores will continues open.
Knecht and firemen stated that something took fire in the workshop, and fires go around through the rest of the building. Clients and employees had to be exhausted.
Grove City Fire Chief J. Badger wasn’t accessible for comment Sat.
