William Jefferson, former Congressman from Louisiana, has been sentenced 13 years of jail imprisonment after he was convicted of the corruption charges.
William Jefferson has been convicted with several corruption charges including the infamous bribery charge which resulted in the raid at his house by FBI. The hearings of Jefferson’s corruption case involved video and audio tapes of his meetings with a secret informant in several restaurants at Washington D.C. One of the complaints against Mr. Jefferson included abuse of his ‘Congressional’ status to get discounts in his daughter’s college fees. It was also mentioned in the complaints filed against him that he had intentions to use huge sum of money in bribery for Nigerian vice president to ‘smooth out’ paths for his family business in Nigeria. When the Federal Board of Investigation (FBI) searched his Washington home, that money was found in the freezer wrapped in an aluminum foil. The sum consisted of $100,000. Mr. Jefferson intended to deliver the money to Nigerian VP on his official visit to U.S.
On Friday, former congressman was handed over the sentence by a federal judge in Alexandria. William Jefferson, 62, was convicted of money laundering and bribery and hence was given a sentence of 13 years in jail. The prosecutors were hoping for a tougher sentence as to them such an act by a congressman have marred the trust of general public in their elected leaders. The defense attorneys of Mr. Jefferson, on the other hand, said that the sentence is a little too strict for the former Rep. and that they would file an appeal against it.
