Admiration for diamonds, owes its value only to its scarcity. The Wittelsbach Diamond also recognized as Der Blaue Wittelsbacher. It is a blue colored square, 32.05-carat emerald-cut diamond with VS2 clarity that sold for $7.6 million at auction this Wednesday.
This is just of a walnut size; the immaculate and transparent diamond sits on a ring that was bought by Leonore Annenberg, a millionaire, striking philanthropist and wife of former UK Ambassador Walter Annenberg, for her 90th birthday. Annenberg passed away in March at the age of ninety- one
The ring was designed by David Webb, a Manhattan jeweler. It is fringed by 2 pear-shaped diamonds, one of them 1.62 carats and the other 1.50 carats. With the faultless attribution of the Annenberg name, this is one of the deluxe and luxury gemstones to appear on the marketplace for several years
The pre-sale evaluation of that ring was $3.5 million to $5 million. The former auction record was $3.2 million for a 31-carat square cut spotless, colorless diamond according to Christie’s in Geneva.
The record for any jewel or diamond at auction is $24.4 million for the 17th century square-shaped grayish-blue 35.55 carat Wittelsbach Diamond. It was sold in December 2008, exceeding the forgoing record of $16.6 million for almost one hundred thousand dollars-diamond sold in Geneva in 1995.
The diamond measures 24.39 mm in diameter and 8.30 mm in depth. It has 82 sides arranged in classically. The star features on the crown are perpendicularly divided and the pavilion has 16 needle-like surfaces, prepared in pairs.
