Usually the high cholesterol levels are associated with Heart diseases and atherosclerosis, however elevated cholesterol levels manifests in many other ways also. One of its manifestation is “Xanthomas”. Xanthomas appear around the eyes near the nose. Usually they have the shape of Reddish – Yellow pimple, but the shape may vary from person to person. Some people may have extended area covered by Xanthomas and yet others may have very limited area affected. It is important to know that the disease is not contagious and other persons won’t acquire it just by touching or having contact in any other way with the affected person. Almost all the cases of Xanthoma involve high triglyceride levels. Usually the condition is not painful and do not interfere with the daily routine of the person afflicted. However there is plenty of cosmetic concern around the condition, especially for female population. Xanthomas are usually treated by peeling off the epidermal layer of the skin so as to speed up the generation of new skin tissue. Peeling is done by applying TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid).
Genetics play a significant role in the metabolism of fats in the body. To understand the fact take the example of Eskimos who eat fat rich diet but seldom have heart related issues. Some people are genetically disposed towards the elevated hyperlipidemia and hypercholesterolemia, whereas others have better system to expel the bad fats or LDLs out of the body.
Diagnosis of Xanthoma does not require complex clinical measure and a physician can diagnose the condition by mere a superficial examination.
