Ziegfeld Girl is 1941 musical and a superbly directed film. The film’s plot makes it highly watchable even today. Starring James Stewart, Judy Garland, Hedy Lamarr, Lana Turner, the film’s story revolves round the lives of Judy (Susan), Hedy (Sandra) and Lana (Sheila), each different but the fist of fate has brought them together. Ziegfeld Girls are the stars on a Broadway show named Ziegfeld Follies. Every charming girl has a dream to be a Ziegfeld Girl. Sheila is a small time worker and wants to be Ziegfeld Girl. She gets the chance of her life when she is offered the place in the show. She is soon flying high. Drinking and dating rich people to forget her longtime boyfriend Gil. Sue is given the chance for her potential as a singer whereas Sandra is picked by chance, she was not there for herself and it was her husband who was being tested for orchestra.
Sheila falls deeper and deeper into the pit. Gil tries his best to win her back, but she has chosen a lifestyle for herself and is not ready to sacrifice that for her old and forgotten love.
Ziegfeld Girl number 2, Sue is trying her best to be a renowned singer but her father is biggest obstacle in her way, who has other plans for Sue
Sandra’s husband is very possessive person and cannot stand the sight of her wife walking in front of other men in revealing dresses.
Shiela’s boyfriend is still pursuing her but she is deep into alcohol and does not want to leave with Gil.
Sue at least gets a chance to hit the stardom, singing in her own style. Sandra realizes the value of true love and reconciles with her husband.
Gil visits Shiel as she has been fired from the show and is seriously ill.
Shiela dies on the set of Ziegfeld follies.
The costumes, starring and plot make Ziefeld Girl a great film.
